The Turn of the Season – Autumn Hiking on the SWCP

As we enter a new season, we reflect on the changing landscape and wildlife that emerges throughout the autumn months. As the days shorten and the temperature dips, we've shared some handy tips to help get you trail-ready for autumn.

As the evenings draw in and wildlife gears up for the season ahead, a new page turns in nature’s calendar. The South West coast experiences a fascinating transition as a host of species reap the benefits of the changing landscape. The autumn months are crucial for witnessing native and migratory species in coastal areas, from the high clifftops to the grassland moors.

Keep an eye out for wildlife

With autumn creeping in, the Path offers new sightings for bird watchers and nature lovers. As early as September, swallows and house martins can be observed as they begin their voyage south for the warmer climates of Africa, the high cliffs offering a brilliant vantage point for spotting rare migratory birds from North America, Europe and Asia. Autumn marks the beginnings of pupping season for grey seals, which can be spotted in isolated caves and coves along the Cornish coastline. Young kestrels take advantage of the cliff sections as they hunt for voles, mice and insects to build up their fat supplies in preparation for the winter. If you’re lucky, you might witness Red Deer during the rutting season from the high grounds of Bodmin Moor to the clifftops of West Penwith. And of course, keep an eye out for the iconic red-billed “Cornish” Choughs on the closely grazed clifftops of the Gwithian coastline.

Connect to nature

The final ebbs of summer bring with them a trail less trodden and a tranquillity that allows us to connect to nature and enjoy the breath-taking views without the noise. The autumn months providing the perfect opportunity to explore coastal towns and villages whilst ferry crossings continue to operate, and small businesses keep their doors open before the quieter winter period sets in. Public transport in the South West provides a gateway to the trail, with rail link bus services and trains running throughout the season. Take the rail to the trail this autumn to explore the coast, with the added benefit of reducing your carbon footprint!

We are fortunate that the Path offers a variety of places to enhance your trail experience, from cafés and pubs to visitor attractions, plus a touch of luxury in the form of coastal spa hotels. As temperatures dip, why not cosy up with a hot chocolate or by a roaring fire at one of our Coast Path passport stamping points? Our Way Makers welcome walkers and are the perfect place to pause, whether you’re packing in the miles, treating yourself to a spa weekend or planning a half-term family break.
