As an illustrator and poet nestled just at the end of the picturesque South West Coast Path, Lauren’s creative journey is deeply intertwined with the serene rhythm of coastal living. In her blog, Lauren shares the inspirations and influences that shape her artistry and poetry, and why the South West Coast Path holds such significance in her heart.
What inspires me?
Nature, with its infinite beauty and marvels, serves as my primary muse. The ever-changing moods of the sea, the rugged cliffs, and the gentle sway of coastal flora and fauna fuel my sketchbook. Moreover, my commitment to mindfulness infuses my work with a sense of tranquility and introspection. Whether capturing the dance of sunlight on the water’s surface or exploring the delicate balance of form and space in my poetry, I strive to evoke a deep sense of connection and wonder with the sea and soil around me.

The importance of the South West Coast Path
The South West Coast Path is not just a trail; it’s a lifeline for inspiration. Its winding paths, hidden coves, and breathtaking vistas offer endless opportunities for exploration and reflection. Walking along its rugged terrain, I find solace in the rhythmic crash of waves and the whisper of sea breeze. It’s a constant reminder of the power and beauty of nature, grounding me in moments of doubt and inspiring me to translate its essence into my creative endeavours.
One of my most recent illustrations is an illustrated map of Dorset which I sell as large art prints from my website. This map features many of my most cherished places, from Arne to Lyme Regis – it was quite tricky to decide which places to highlight on this map as there are just so many gorgeous places!

Mindful making
My designs are deeply influenced by the ethos of slow living and mindfulness. I believe in creating art that not only captivates the eye but also nourishes the soul. Whether I’m working on illustrative branding projects or surface designs for fabrics, my approach is rooted in simplicity, harmony, and intentionality. I strive to distill complex concepts into elegant visual narratives that resonate with authenticity and depth.
I offer a taster of this mindful approach to creativity in my Gentle Drawing Workshop sessions which I regularly offer at Careys Secret Garden in Wareham.

Gently drawn in Dorset
The coast is more than just a backdrop for my work; it’s a catalyst for creativity. The ever-changing interplay of light and shadow, the raw power of the elements, and the delicate ecosystem of the shoreline all inform my artistic process. From the fluid lines of seashells to the intricate patterns of tide pools, I find endless inspiration in the nuances of coastal life. Each brushstroke and stanza is imbued with the spirit of the sea, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of discovery and contemplation.
The impact of a digital process

Digital art has revolutionised my creative process, allowing me to experiment with composition in ways that were previously unimaginable. The flexibility and immediacy of digital tools have expanded my artistic horizons, allowing me to work dynamically and anywhere in the world.
I still very much enjoy sketching in a traditional pocket sketchbook, and feel this is integral for drawing observation when out walking. I then often take elements from these free and rough drawings and translate them into a digital format.
In essence, my artistic journey is a celebration of the profound beauty and wisdom of the natural world, a testament to the transformative power of creativity, and a tribute to the timeless allure of coastal living. Through my designs and poetry, I aspire to inspire others to slow down, embrace the present moment, and find solace in the simple joys of life. As I continue to wander along the South West Coast Path, I am reminded that creativity is not just a destination but a journeyโa journey of exploration, discovery, and endless possibility.
