Making Black Friday Green

This year we as a Charity will again be supporting Green Friday (29th November 2024) and Giving Tuesday (3rd December 2024); aiming to give people globally an opportunity to avoid the pressure to buy which comes with Black Friday and do something special for the planet.ย

What is Green Friday?

So what are Green Friday and Giving Tuesday and how can you get involved supporting the South West Coast Path? Green Friday has been promoted for a number of years, stemming from โ€œbuy nothing dayโ€, as a way to encourage us to shop more sustainably, buy locally and enjoy the environment as an alternative to Black Friday. With the same ethos behind it, Giving Tuesday, which falls on the Tuesday after Black Friday, was created in 2012 to encourage people โ€œto do goodโ€. We as a team, hope that in the face of consumerism and pressure to buy; promoting these days will give our supporters an affordable and accessible way to celebrate with loved ones, support local businesses, and do something good for our communities and environment. Weโ€™ve included some ideas for Green Friday and Giving Tuesday below so you can get involved!ย

1. Get out on the world’s happiest walk

Take some time to get out and enjoy the South West Coast Path either in solitude or with loved ones. If you are lucky enough to live nearby plan your trip to the coast path using our Trip Planning guide: Trip Planning – South West Coast Path  and explore volunteering opportunities to get out and about on the path: Volunteer – South West Coast Path. If you live further away why not delve into our pages about the Path and read about our fascinating culture and environment: History, Nature, Landscape & Culture – South West Coast Path.

2. Give to support the South West Coast Path

We have many different options for you to financially support the trail, from donating what you feel, becoming a member and even becoming or making a loved one a โ€œMile Makerโ€ and caring for one mile of the South West Coast Path for one year. 3. Challenge yourself for the Path

We are so lucky to have so many supporters who challenge themselves to raise money and awareness for the path. Why not take some time this festive period to set yourself a challenge on the SWCP and raise some funds to take care of the UKโ€™s longest National Trail. Get in touch: Take On the Coast Path Challenge – South West Coast Path to get started.

4. Turn the economy green

Whether you are a business owner or work for an organisation looking to give back to their local environment; your work can support the trail. We are part of 1% for the Planet where businesses commit 1% of gross sales to non-profitโ€™s supporting the environment. Our โ€œWay Makerโ€ Programme looks to promote our local providers along the Path.

Businesses who wish to support one mile of the 630 miles of SWCP for one year can become โ€œMile Makersโ€ and we have many other opportunities to support the South West Coast Path: As a business – South West Coast Path.

5. Take part in an event which gives back to the Path

We are so lucky to have many different events happening all over the SWCP. From running and walking the path to guided tours and sea swimming trips, it all happens on the worlds happiest walk. We are also lucky enough to have so many of these businesses who appreciate how important it is to give back to the SWCP and ensure its protection for the future. Our Coast Path Friendly events and activities can be found: Coast Path Friendly Activities – South West Coast Path, by supporting these events you can be sure you are supporting the Path.

Whatever you do this Green Friday, Giving Tuesday and over the festive period we hope you find a way to give back to the planet whilst making the most of our fantastic environment.
