Trail Tails: Our Favourite Autumn & Winter South West Coast Path Walks with Dogs from Woolacombe

With autumn just around the corner, we've reached out to Byron Woolacombe Holidays for their pick of dog-friendly walks a short distance from Woolacombe, taking in some of the most iconic sections of the South West Coast Path.

When the summer surfers pack up and the rolling dunes settle into a quiet calm, Woolacombe takes on a special kind of magic. Autumn and winter walks here arenโ€™t just about fresh air and ocean views โ€“ theyโ€™re about that liberating sense of space, muddy paws, wind-whipped cheeks, and the pure joy of a long, rewarding stroll along dramatic coastal scenery. And if youโ€™re holidaying with your dog, this stretch of the South West Coast Path offers some of the very best walks around.

At Byron Woolacombe Holidays, weโ€™re lucky enough to live and work in this stunning corner of North Devon. Nestled just a short distance from one of the most iconic sections of theย South Westย Coast Path, weโ€™ve gathered our local expertise to share our top off-season dog-friendly coastal walks.

1. Woolacombe to Baggy Point (Circular – Moderate)

Baggy Point by Alan Law

Start: National Trust Baggy Point Car Park, Woolacombe (EX33 1FF)
Terrain: Undulating coastal path with grassy cliff edges and a few uneven sections

Begin your adventure at the southern end of Woolacombe Beach, where the South West Coast Path beckons you up onto the clifftops at Vention Point. Follow the well-signposted route toward Baggy Point, where dramatic views over the bay and even the occasional glimpse of playful dolphins or seals await.

At Baggy Point, complete your loop by returning via the inland National Trust path โ€“ or if the tide permits, wander out along the beach before heading back. Refresh yourself at a local favourite with a warm drink at The Porthole or Meraki Coffee Co., where both staff and pups are greeted with a smile.

2. Mortehoe to Bull Point Lighthouse (Out-and-back – Moderate)

Start: Mortehoe Car Park (EX34 7DT)
Terrain: A mix of rocky, uneven paths and narrow coastal sections with grazing livestock nearby

Set off from the heart of the charming village of Mortehoe. Follow the coast path westward to Morte Point, a striking outcrop boasting awe-inspiring sea views and regular seal sightings. Then, turn east along the path to reach the photogenic Bull Point Lighthouse, perched high above secluded coves.

This route is a bit rugged in places, so be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and keep your dog secure where needed. Along the way, pause for a reflective moment or a quick visit to St. Maryโ€™s Church in Mortehoe, a historical gem that underscores the long tradition of coastal wanderers in the area.

3. Lee Bay to Ilfracombe (Linear – Challenging)

Start: Lee Bay Car Park (EX34 8LN)
Terrain: Steep ascents and descents, wooded sections, and occasionally narrow cliff paths

For those after a more dramatic experience, this route is an adventure on every step. Leaving Lee Bay, the path takes you on a sweeping, linear journey toward Ilfracombe. Expect steep climbs, woodland stretches, and narrow cliff-top paths that reward you with breathtaking views across the Bristol Channel.

This is a path for the more energetic walkers and their sure-footed dogs, so prepare for a bit of a challenge. And once you reach Ilfracombe, you might want to arrange a pickup or hop on one of the local buses back, leaving you free to simply savour the dayโ€™s experience. Warm up afterwards with a visit to The Grampus Inn in Lee Bayโ€”a true local gem for a pint and a cozy fire.

4. Heddon’s Mouth to Woody Bay (Linear – Moderate to Challenging)

Woody Bay by Rose Gamble

Start: National Trust Heddon Valley Car Park (EX31 4PY)
Terrain: Narrow cliff paths with significant elevation changes, often remote and exposed in parts

A short drive east from Woolacombe brings you into the wild landscapes of Exmoor National Park. Begin at Heddon Valley, and follow the well-marked route through ancient woodland, eventually climbing along high coastal paths towards Woody Bay.

This section of the path is thrilling, with some of Englandโ€™s highest sea cliffs offering dramatic views over the Atlantic. It is ideal for those in good shape with confident dogs that enjoy a bit of a challenge. When the walk concludes, a stop at The Hunters Inn is highly recommendedโ€”a welcoming country pub with a roaring fire and hearty local ales.

From Down End in Croyde, follow the coast path south along the cliff tops before descending gently to the sprawling sands of Saunton. This dog-friendly route is an ideal out-and-back for those who appreciate big skies, soft dunes, and the freedom of the open coast.

After your stroll, reward yourself and your four-legged friend with treats from Blue Groovein Croyde or enjoy coastal views at Saunton Sands Beachside Grill.
